Car recommendation: Large cars/SUVs or 4WD
Suitable for: Families, couples, ski fanatics
A straight drive from Christchurch to Queenstown is 482 km. Without any stops, it typically takes around 6-7 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. For safety reasons, you should not attempt to drive without taking a few rest breaks on the way.
You should also keep in mind how road conditions across New Zealand change during the winter period, especially on the South Island. Roads may be closed due to snow or weather damage. Black ice can be dangerous on rural or shaded roads. You will need to drive slower to accommodate for ice and snow, and your vehicle may need winter chains. This may affect your travel time to each destination.
Be sure to check out our winter driving tips in New Zealand to drive with confidence. Before you set out on the road, you should also check the New Zealand Transport Agency journey planner to make sure your path ahead isn’t closed or damaged.

My favourite winter getaway from Christchurch is Lake Tekapo – the scenic drive, breathtaking views, and relaxing hot pools make it the perfect spot to unwind and soak up the season.
The Church of the Good Shepherd is indeed a hidden gem in Aotearoa. Located in the picturesque town of Lake Tekapo in the South Island, this charming little church is one of the most iconic and tranquil places in the country.
My favourite thing about New Zealand so far has just been travelling and meeting like-minded people, and Queenstown has been a beautiful place surrounded by mountains, snow and winter activities that I absolutely love!
If you're in Queenstown, The Remarkables is a must-visit ski field! With stunning alpine views, varied terrain for all skill levels, and an easy 40-minute drive from town, it’s the perfect winter playground. Plus, GO Rentals has you covered with vehicles equipped for mountain adventures – just don’t forget to grab snow chains if conditions require them!
Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island and has plenty to do before you even start your road trip.
Road conditions in winter:
The roads in Christschurch are well maintained, and due to congestion, ice on the road is typically not an issue. However, be sure to give a wide berth to other cars and drive slowly to accommodate for slippery roads.
You’ll find this ice rink only a 12-minute drive away from Christchurch City Centre. Whether you’re a pro at gliding across the ice or have never worn blades before, the Alpine Ice Sports Centre will have something for you. Alpine Ice offers programs suitable for adults and children of all ages to learn how to skate or take their skills to the next level.
The cold can be harsh, but you can make it even worse in an epic winter weather adventure! Immerse yourself in an incredible experience at the International Antarctic Centre. Brave powerful winter storms, blend in with penguins and befriend huskies at this one-of-a-kind discovery centre.
The best view of Christchurch can be found a 15-minute drive away from the city centre. The Gondola will give you a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and beyond. See the snow-covered fields of Canterbury Plain stretched out before you, or take in the distant view of the Southern Alps.
Once you’ve experienced Christchurch, head out via Bealey Road to reach Mount Taylor, home to one of the most famous skiing areas in all of New Zealand.
Road conditions in winter:
The roads from Christchurch are normally well-maintained, but extreme weather may affect the road conditions or cause the road to close. Parts of the road are shaded, and in the morning, there may be issues with black ice. The roads up to Mt Hutt should be driven on as slowly and cautiously as possible.
Since 2013, the World Ski Awards have voted Mt Hutt as New Zealand's best ski resort. The terrain boasts over 365 hectares of beautiful powder, serviced by three chair lifts. Large parts of Mt Hutt are best for experienced riders, but there is a flatter area suitable for beginners and learners.
Toboggans can be rented from the resort, as well as appropriate clothing if needed. You’ll find the best tobogganing slopes by the beginner’s ski area, called the ‘Magic Carpet’ for its flatness.
Once you’ve had fun shredding powder, why not soothe your muscles with a ski and soak package? The Opuke Thermal Pools and Spa is an adult-exclusive resort perfect for unwinding after a long day in the Alps. From mineral hot tubs overlooking the snowy mountain to relaxing massages under expert hands, Opuke offers the healing touch you’ll need to keep adventuring.
Drive cautiously on your way down from Mt Hutt until you reach the frozen edges of Lake Tekapo via Inland scenic route 72 and State Highway 79.
Road conditions in winter:
Some parts of the road down from Mt Hutt are unsealed and should be driven with the utmost caution. The rest of the route to Lake Tekapo is flat and well-maintained, but be wary of shaded areas with black ice if you are driving in the morning.
Roundhill is a great resort for first-time skiers; even the drive up is more forgiving than the typical mountain road. You’ll find a large beginner’s area with a gentle gradient, plenty of space to learn and 2 rope tows to help you find your feet better. For more experienced riders, the 2 T-bars will take you to trails with plenty of natural dips and curls for a more challenging experience.
Who said you needed skis? Soar down over 150 metres of snow at the Tekapo Spring Snow Tube Park, which is open from April to October. Once you’ve had your fun, be sure to warm up at the hot pools before you go.
Enjoy a thrilling mix of sport and culture at Tekapo Springs Ice Skating Rink. Curling is a traditional sport of Scotland, and it’s best described as an eight-team hockey game. Learn to play or watch an expert team before you enjoy a nice warm drink at the Altitude 720 Cafe and Bar.
Once you’ve seen the gorgeous views of the lake's frozen shores for yourself, it’s time to head back up into the mountains. Take State Highway 8 and Mount Cook Road to see serene lake views on your way to Aoraki/Mount Cook.
Road conditions in winter:
The road to Aoraki/Mount Cook is well-maintained, but some parts may be unsealed. Be wary of ice or closures on the road past Lake Pukaki.
With low levels of light pollution and a stunning view no matter the altitude, Mount Cook is a fantastic place to contemplate the night sky. You can also find guided stargazing tours in the area, such as Big Sky Stargazing or the Pukaki Observatory. With a guided tour, you can see planets and celestial objects through high-powered telescopes or simply be guided through the galaxy as seen by the naked eye.
You’ll find this unique location in the Hermitage Hotel. The Sir Edmond Hillary Alpine Centre isn’t just a museum showcasing the history of the Mount Cook region. It is also an incredible full-dome planetarium and cinema, letting you see the stars in gorgeous detail.
Long hikes are not the only way to see the stunning views of Mount Cook. Some of the more remote but beautiful glaciers can only be reached by air. Book a scenic flight and glacier landing with expert companies like Mount Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters or Inflight Experiences to see the Alps like never before.
Once you’ve shredded the slopes of Mount Cook, it’s time to head back down State Highway 80, passing Lake Pukaki once again on your way to Lake Ohau.
Road conditions in winter:
Similar to the route to Mount Cook, the roads are well maintained, but parts may be unsealed. Be aware of ice and heavy snow coming down from the mountains on your journey.
With friendly crowds and instructors, fresh powder and uncrowded slopes, the Ohau Snow Fields are a ski or snowboard fanatics’ dream. Thanks to a state-of-the-art Alpin snowmaking machine, the fields reliably have snow all season long, from opening in June until closing in October. For expert riders, the chairlift provides easy access to some of the most extreme slopes in the area.
You can hire snowshoes to tackle the mountainside at the Ohau Snow Fields. From there, you can begin the breathtaking Lake Ohau hiking track through the Alpine Village. After an incredible journey across the lake’s shoreline, you’ll finish right at the simply astonishing view from Ben Ohau Peak.
If you need to rest your weary head from all your winter travels, the Lake Ohau Lodge is right next door. The lodge has been running since 1951 and offers friendly service with dinner, bed and breakfast packages included. Enjoy warmth and comfort with a serene winter wonderland right outside your door.
Once you’ve conquered Ben Ohau Peak, it’s time to head past the farmlands to Wanaka via State Highway 8.
Road conditions in winter:
The road to Wanaka is flat and has unsealed sections but is otherwise well maintained. While you should remain cautious, there are fewer shaded areas and less risk of ice as the sun comes up.
New Zealand's biggest ski resort is just a 41-minute drive away from Wanaka. The slopes themselves slightly skew towards more advanced riders, but you’ll still find tracks perfect for experts, beginners and intermediate skiers. The resort also features eight different cafes, a fully licensed kids centre, multiple apartment lodges and a well-equipped rental space for winter gear.
The Treble Cone ski fields are one of the largest fields in all of New Zealand at 550 hectares. A perfect destination for intermediate riders and seasoned veterans, the area features many uninterrupted runs, some going on for 4 km. Beginners may want to try the Cardona Alps for a more suitable experience.
You’ll find New Zealand's only cross-country ski field a 45-minute drive from town. The Pisa Conservation Area comes to life in the cold season, becoming a winter wonderland perfect for all levels of snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, biking and hiking. You can also find family-friendly huts suitable for use all year round and an on-site cafe open during winter.
Once you’ve said your goodbyes to Wanaka, it’s time to take the Cardona Valley Road and Crown Range Road down to Queenstown.
Road conditions in winter:
The roads to Queenstown are mainly sealed and are in good condition. However, if there is excessive snow, the road may be affected, and some paths may be closed off for safety or repairs.
Queenstown's highest gondola offers an outstanding view and a great variety of activities once you’ve reached the peak. On top of quality ski trails, Coronet Peak has a dedicated tobogganing slope and tons of fresh powder for making snowmen or having snowball fights. When you get peckish or cold, you can warm up with a meal and hot chocolate at the many local cafes in the area.
The Remarkables ski area is famous for its beautiful views, sheer height and warm atmosphere. With slopes suitable for beginners and experienced shredders, The Remarkable is suitable for everyone. You can also find a beautiful terrain park, 4 chairlifts and stunning lodges across the area.
You’ll reach the Onsen Hot Pool Retreat and Day Spa after a 10-minute drive from Queenstown. This renowned day spa lets you take a step back from your thrilling winter adventures and relax in warm, mineral-rich waters. Enjoy the gorgeous views of the peaks from the comfort of a hot tub, or pamper yourself with treatments delivered by expert therapists.
