Generally, electric vehicles are easier to refuel than an internal combustion engine petrol car, and you can enjoy even further savings with a free charging station. New Zealand has a wide and varied range of EV charging stations to encourage greener driving, but many formerly free stations have recently transitioned to being pay-to-use, such as ChargeNet.Â
However, there are still plenty of free charging stations across New Zealand, though many use slower AC chargers that may require you to bring your own cable. Charging your EV gives you plenty of time to grab a quick bite to eat, check out local shopping or see some of the most iconic sights of Auckland. Whether you’re excited about hiring a Tesla from GO Rentals or eager to save on electricity costs, our guide to free EV chargers in Auckland will jumpstart your journey across New Zealand!

How to locate free charging stations across Auckland
Using Google Maps’ EV Charging Stations feature is a fantastic way to find power points along your route, especially if you are preparing for a road trip. However, it can be hard to find free charging stations as the payment filter interferes with seeing free stations as often.Â
We’ve found that Plugshare is the most effective and user-friendly map for finding free charging stations in Auckland. The wide variety of filters lets you see where free stations are and where usage may be restricted. You can also find station reviews, check-ins and tips for EV drivers. However, it is not available in app format, so you would need to enter the station’s coordinates on your map to plan your route.
