Electric vehicles are generally cheaper to run than petrol models, especially when you’re lucky enough to find a free charger. When EVs were first rolled out in New Zealand, many networks installed free EV chargers across the North and South Islands to encourage drivers to switch. However, many of these networks, such as ChargeNet, have transitioned to a pay-to-use model.

You can still find some free EV charging stations in Christchurch, but many of them are AC slow chargers and require you to bring your own cables. If you time it right, you can charge up while you shop, eat, or take in one of the many amazing sights in Christchurch. Whether you are energised for a GO Rentals Tesla hire or you are looking to save on electricity in your own EV, we have a current collection of free chargers in Christchurch. Watt a resource!

How to find free EV charging stations in Christchurch

Google Maps’ EV Charging Stations feature is great for finding power points across New Zealand, especially when you are planning a road trip. However, the payments filter does have an option for “free to use”, so it is a little difficult to locate them easily.

We have found that PlugShare is the most user-friendly map for finding free EV charging stations in Christchurch. The filters allow you to select free charging, and they appear as green pins on the interactive map. Users can check in to the location and provide tips and reviews for EV drivers, so you can see if the charger is working, where it is located and how long it takes. The only downside is that it is not available in app format, so you would need to put the location into your route map to plan your drive in an EV.

Mesmerised by the view at the Tesla Supercharger station in Omarama. As Tesla is not in our country, we are thankful to GO Rentals for the opportunity to use a Tesla on our 9-day road trip to the South Island. The car is immensely useful and easy to drive.

We rented an environmentally friendly electric car from GO Rentals to visit the beautiful Kaikoura. It’s great to be able to easily rent a car with a smaller carbon footprint, which may, in turn, help to preserve the beautiful natural landscapes of New Zealand. We hope to be back one day to explore more of New Zealand too!
