- The bridge was expanded from 4 lanes to 8 in 1969 due to higher than anticipated use
- The bridge has an estimated traffic volume of over 160,000 vehicles a day
- The nickname of the Harbour Bridge is ‘The Coathanger’.
The Bridge Climb
The Bungy and Bridge Climb was the brainchild of Kiwi entrepreneur and extreme sports legend, AJ Hackett, who famously performed his first amateur bungy jump off the Harbour Bridge in 1986.
From this point on some say adventure tourism was born with Hackett opening the first commercial public bungy in the world in Queenstown in 1988.
The Auckland Harbour Bridge Climb and Bungy came later but has quickly become one of the most highly rated and thrilling activities you can experience in the city and it’s easy to understand why.
